The Project

The interventions concerned the realization of 3 ENA modules, the related interconnecting (mechanical, electrical and instrumental) and the conduction of Monitoring and Natural Attenuation “MNA”.

ENA is a reclamation technology based on the stimulation of biodegradation in an anaerobic environment, in this specific case applied to chlorinated solvents. The mechanism of choice is anaerobic reductive dehalogenation/dechlorination, corresponding to the sequential replacement of a chlorine atom, present in a chlorinated solvent molecule, by a hydrogen atom. In this process, the pollutant molecule is reduced by constituting the electron acceptor, made available to the oxidation reaction of a primary substrate, which acts as an electron donor.

The purpose of the plants envisaged was the introduction, into the upper portion of the aquifer present in the subsoil of the site, of substrates suitable for stimulating the biodegradation of chlorinated solvents in an anaerobic environment. In the case of Module 2, a reactive cell was also created with conditions favourable to biodegradation and at the same time local containment of the contamination present in the water table.

In this specific case, the following interventions were carried out:

  • module 1: injection of two organic substrates through three injection wells;
  • module 2: extraction from one well and re-injection into three injection wells;
  • module 4: injection of two organic substrates through two injection wells.

Each intervention consisted of a phase of installation of wells and plants, a phase of plant management and injection/dosing of reagents and monitoring during and after the intervention.

The duration of the planned interventions is 24 months, calculated for each module starting from the first substrate injection.
